On the Fence was designed to reveal the potential of Main Street, an area at the center of urban revitalization currently obscured by chain link fences in the Southside district of downtown Chattanooga. To complement renewal efforts, local artists, graphic designers, architects, schools, and individuals submitted designs for art installations to be exhibited on the chain link fences along the Main Street corridor. In February, a panel consisting of Public Art Committee members, neighborhood residents, and area property owners selected 8 winning proposals. The art installations will be on view for up to one year. On the Fence is made possible with the generous support of the Lyndhurst Foundation.
Public Art Chattanooga (PAC) introduces a wide range of public art into the community enhancing the public realm and enriching the lives of visitors and residents. PAC is housed in the Chattanooga Department of Parks and Recreation.

I love art that is out of the ordinary. I wish more communities can get more involved and make ordinary things like fences and make them look different. Coming from Chicago the roads look dirty, full of cracks and potholes, and covered in decaying garbage. Now that I live in Arizona their highways are absolutely beautiful, full of plants and sculptures built in the walls. So when I saw this gallery of the decorated fences I fell in love with it immediately. All of them are unique in their own way. The one with all the colored pencils is so simple and I could see something like that in front of an elementary school. But I would say my favorite one is one of the last ones that looks like it’s in a parking lot. It looks like a bunch of different rusted shapes. I just find it so interesting because it does not even look a normal fence but a sculpture . The design is so unique and my eye moves throughout the whole piece. If I could go there and see it I would plop down right in front of it and stare at it for hours.
