What Lies Beneath: The Interment of a Culture is a photographic installation for the Santa Fe Community Convention Center based on the site’s archeology. Joan Zalenski was granted access to the archeological site. Working closely with the lead archeologist and representatives of the Pueblo of Tesuque, she photographed numerous non-culturally sensitive artifacts as well as the site itself. Utilizing this source photography, Zalenski created a large-scale photographic “quilt” based on the six different historical periods found at the site.
