In order to involve the greater Chattanooga community in the process, and to encourage the community to visit the fences, citizens are invited to cast a vote for their favorite fence at the 4 Bridges Art Festival at the First Tennessee Pavilion on Saturday, April 17 from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, April 18 from 11 am to 5 pm. Voting will also be available online at www.onthefencedesign.com from April 17-24.

On the Fence was designed to reveal the potential of Main Street, an area at the center of urban revitalization currently obscured by chain link fences in the Southside district of downtown Chattanooga. To complement renewal efforts, local artists, graphic designers, architects, schools, and individuals submitted designs for art installations to be exhibited on the chain link fences along the Main Street corridor. In February, a panel consisting of Public Art Committee members, neighborhood residents, and area property owners selected 8 winning proposals. The art installations will be on view for up to one year. On the Fence is made possible with the generous support of the Lyndhurst Foundation.

Public Art Chattanooga (PAC) introduces a wide range of public art into the community enhancing the public realm and enriching the lives of visitors and residents. PAC is housed in the Chattanooga Department of Parks and Recreation.

Jordan Baseman- Nature's Great Experiment - Tuesday, April 14, 2010

Screening & Panel Talk with:

Jordan Baseman, Susan MacWilliam, Richard West & Dr. Tony O'Neill

Tuesday 13th April from 7pm

Catalyst Arts is showing Nature’s Great Experiment, by artist/filmmaker Jordan Baseman, just one leg of a national tour as p art of the Wellcome Collection’s Identity Project season. The tour comprises three films created in 2007 with funding from the Wellcome Trust and Arts and Humanities Research Board.

Heavily edited interviews coalesce with 16mm archive film from the Wellcome Collection library, field recordings, and/or new footage created by Baseman himself, to create powerful, astute and often disturbing insights into the work of the Twin Research Team at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London. Exploring the perspectives of those involved (the scientist, the family interviewer and the mother of twins), the project raises the question: What constitutes normality?

Screenings will be followed by a discussion involving Baseman, prominent artists, and scientists in the field of twin research. The project will continue online with written pieces by the participants after the screenings at http://www.naturesgreatexperiment.com

On 13 April Catalyst Arts, Belfast will host Nature’s Great Experiment. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with artists Jordan Baseman and Susan MacWilliams; Dr Tony O’Neill - Senior Lecturer, Queen’s University, Belfast and Consultant Psychiatrist, Mater Hospital, Belfast; and Richard West – Co-founder of Factotum, Editor of Source Photographic Review and The Vacuum.

i RAN HOME presents Iran Inside Out - Tailored - April 2010

i RAN HOME presents Iran Inside Out - Tailored
at Galerie Christian Hosp (Halle am Wasser, Invalidenstr. 50/51, 10557 Berlin)

PLEASE JOIN US for presentations, performances and talks on inclusion/exclusion, censorship, and self-censorship of non-Western art in the institutionalized art scene.

Two exciting weekends (April 9-11 / April 16-18) with an interactive program on the exhibition "Iran Inside Out", which travelled from NYC to Chicago to Dubai.

With every move to another city the exhibition was redesigned. We want to further analyze what exactly motivated these changes. Why were some artists excluded, why were their works exchanged for others? Who was left behind in this seemingly tailor-made exhibition, which had to appear in a new outfit whenever it changed locations?

From there, we would like to move on and follow up on aspects of inclusion/exclusion, censorship, and self-censorship in relating fields of cultural activities.

Program

- Friday April 9, 2010, from 7 pm

1. Presentation of the film "So hot?! So not?!", 2010, by Shahram Entekhabi in collaboration with Kristina Paustian

2. Talk with Shahram Entekhabi, Kathrin Becker, N.N., moderated by Sophia Schultz

3. "So hot?! So not?!" (questionnaire)

- Saturday April 10, 2010, from 7 pm

1. Presentation, live performance, and talk: "Ban on music in Iran“ with Heydar Sajedi, composer and musician for theatre and film, moderated by Jamila Adeli

2. "So hot?! So not?!" (questionnaire continued)

- Sunday April 11, 2010, from 2 pm

1. Workshop "Lost in Transmission"
with Shahram Entekhabi and Sophia Schultz (by invitation only)

The starting point for the workshop is the following questions:

- Art and cultural policy: What is the role of non-Western art in the institutional context of the West? What if the context shifts from the Western to the non-Western institutional context? Is there a hidden agenda?

- Art and market: How is the profile of non-Western art that is being shaped in the various cultural settings mirrored on the art market?

From there, we would like to move on and follow up on aspects of inclusion/exclusion, censorship, and self-censorship in relating fields of cultural activities.

- Friday, April 16, 2010, from 7 pm

1. Publication of the results of the "So hot?! So not?!" questionnaire

2. Live Curating "Boîte iranienne en valise"

- Saturday, April 17, 2010, from 7 pm

1. Presentation of the results of the "Lost in Transmission" workshop (open to the public)

- Sunday, April 18, 2010, from 2 pm

Workshop and closing of the event with Shahram Entekhabi and Sophia Schultz (by invitation only)

- Follow-up on the last workshop, coming up with an idea for a publication and for the next i RAN HOME project.
